FRED MACHETANZ

THE PERSONAL COLLECTION

Fred Machetanz first came to Alaska in 1935, spent two years in Unalakleet, and later returned to Alaska to spend the rest of his life painting the land and people that he loved. He was an intensely creative man whose vision helped shape the way we see Alaska.
In 2017 I received selected items from the personal estate of Fred and Sara Machetanz. Included were many pieces that have not been seen for more than seventy years and many pieces that were never publicly displayed. There are rare drawings and paintings along with the artist’s proofs and printer’s proofs of his color offset lithographs and stone lithographs, and lovely preparatory sketches of his subjects. Also included, jewelry, porcelain, Alaska Native art, books, and personal mementos.
